What were the first cities?
Some 11,000
years ago, humans living in the ancient Middle East region shifted from nomadic
existence towards a settled life. They started farming. They used sheep, wild
bores, of etc. as domestic creatures. These were probably the first cities.
Catal Hüyuk, Turkey
One of the
world's oldest cities is Catal Hüyük in Anatolia. Turkey t is not known how old
it is, but some of the remnants date back to 6250 BC. A remarkable fact about
the city was that people got into their houses through holes in the flat roof.
What's the world's oldest city?
No one knows for certain, but one of the oldest is Jericho in
Israel. The ruins of some of the city walls date back overe11,000 years. They
were massive stone structures perhaps 7 m fall. There were also many other
cities in the Middle East at least 7,000 years ago.
Who built the first roof gardens?
They were
built during the period of the Sumer civilization 6,000 years ago which
flourished on the fertile land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers ((in
modern Iraq). The people built the great cities of ur and eridu. One of the main
attractions of Ur were the ziggurats where the gods were worshipped. They were
giant stepped pyramids, with frees and lush gardens on top.
Where did actual writing begin?
It began
around 3000 BC, when the Sumerians developed
the cuneiform (wedge-shaped) script, named for the shape of the styles Used for press marks into clay tablets.
What were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?
The Hanging
Gardens of Babylon were supposed of have been built by King Nebuchadnezzar ll
in the Sixth century BC. They were a gift to his wife amytis. She belonged to a
mountainous region, so the tiers of the gardens reminded her of her home. These
beautiful hanging gardens were one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient world.
Who were the pharaohs?
The pharaohs
were the rulers or kings of Ancient Egypt. They ruled for nearly 3,000 years,
from 2920 BC. They left behind great monuments like the great pyramids, giant
statues, paintings, mummies, beautiful gold and jeweled objects and of course
their picture writing.
What is civilization?
The word
'civilization' is derived from the Latin word civil meaning city dweller. It is
the highly organized, settled way of life complete with rules and laws, as well
as writing Civilizations came about as the humans started living in cities.
