  Nomadic Transition What were the first cities? Some 11,000 years ago, humans living in the ancient Middle East region shifted from nomadic existence towards a settled life. They started farming. They used sheep, wild bores, of etc. as domestic creatures. These were probably the first cities .   Catal Hüyuk, Turkey One of the world's oldest cities is Catal Hüyük in Anatolia. Turkey t is not known how old it is, but some of the remnants date back to 6250 BC. A remarkable fact about the city was that people got into their houses through holes in the flat roof .   Beginners Who were the first farmers? EARLY PEOPLE MOSTLY LIVED in small groups. They moved around hunting animals and gathering food from wild plants. Then, about 12,000 years ago, some people learned to herd animals such as sheep and goats. Others learned to sow seeds. They started growing crops. All these events took place at different times in different parts of the world. The earliest farms were created by the people of the Middle East around 15,000 years ago. But there were farms long ago in China, India and Central America. Ancient Egyptian farmers The development of farms led to the creation of the world's first great civilizations including the Egyptian known for its pyramids. The farms were along the River Nile.
