When did the first humans live?
THE FIRST
TRUE HUMANS lived about 80,000 years ago. But there were human-like creatures
millions of years earlier. These were called hominids. They were of different
kinds. The earliest hominids were much like apes. They had long arms and a big
jaw. But with passage of time, they evolved (changed) to become like humans.
Hominids and apes probably had the same ancestor an orangutan-like creature
that lived in Africa six million years ago.

The
Neanderthals and early humans often lived in caves. They made magnificent
paintings on the cave walls mostly of the animals they hunted.
Who were the first hominids?
Some of the oldest remains of The
hominids date around four million years ago. They belong to a group of creatures
called Australopithecus, who lived in
Africa. Australopithecus means 'southern ape. Most southern apes walked upright
like humans but were little more than a meter fall. They had a small brain,
long and narrow jaws and hairy bodies. they are fruits and vegetables.
Who first used tools?
The first
hominid to use tools skillfully was Homo habilis or handy man', They appeared
in Africa about two million years ago. The handy man was the first real
human-like creature. He had a large brain. He used tools to cut hides to make
clothes and food for eating.
Where did hominids live?
The early
hominids lived in Africa. They only began to spread out two million years ago.
Making fire
Learning to
make fire was one of Homo Erectus greatest achievements. It kept them warm
during winter. Plus they could cook food now, and eat meat.

Early humans
were usually nomads. They lived in tents made of hide, bones and sticks rather than
permanent houses.

Who were the first hunters?
The earliest
hominids were vegetarians like apes. But about 1.5-2 million years ago, a kind
of hominid called Homo erectus or upright man began to hunt and eat meat.
Upright man could light fire, cook food and hunt with wooden spears. These men
were also the first hominids to spread out of Africa. Their remains have been
found as far away as Russia and Indonesia.
Who was Neanderthal man?
Humans
belong to a group called Homo sapiens, or wise man. The Neanderthal man was the
first wise man, appearing about 100,000 years ago. They had a bigger brain than
ours and a rugged body. No one knows why they died Out.
What is the Stone Age?
Stone Age was
the period when early humans made their tools and weapons from stone. This
period lasted from the time early humans made the first stone tools about 3.4
million years ago till the time the first metal tools began to be made The
Stone Age is divided into three periods: the Paleolithic or Old Stone Age from
2 million to 12,000 years ago; the Mesolithic from 12,000 to 9,000 years ago
and the Neolithic or New Stone Age from 9,000 to 6,000 years ago.
