Earth-the Wonder Planet

Earth-the Wonder Planet

What is Earth?

The earth is one of the eight planets that continually revolve around the sun. The planets and the Sun make our solar system. The Earth is the third planet out from the Sun, located between Venus and Mars. The Earth is a sphere made largely of rock. Two-thirds of the surface is covered by water. It is the only planet with oxygen in its atmosphere. The presence of water and oxygen is what makes the Earth a suitable planet for the existence of life.

How did the Earth begin?

The Earth was a clouds of gases and dust that circled around the sun about four and a half billion years ago. Then the clouds of gas started to condense and thus formed trillions of small beads. These beads then started to clump together as a single mass due to gravity. This mass is now we live on. Thus the Earth was just a ball of fire a long ago and later it got its hard crust and atmosphere due to gradual Cooling.

How were the planets formed?

No-one is absolutely sure how the planets formed. But most astronomers think that about five billion years ago the Sun formed and then a vast cloud of hot gas and dust began to circle around the sun. Then, parts of this cloud began to join together due to gravity. Each of these clumps then started to grow to form the planets.

How does the Earth look like?

The earth looks like a sphere, but it is not quite a perfect sphere. As if rotates faster at the equator and slower at the poles, the Earth has bulges at the equator and is flattened at the poles. Scientists describe the shape of Earth as 'geoid' which means earth-shaped.

What is the value of Period of rotation of Earth?

The earth completes one rotation on its axis in 24 hours, which is why a day is 24 hours long. But the actual time period is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.09 seconds to turn round. While the earth rotates, it also moves around the sun in the interval from one day to another. Due to this reason, it takes exactly 24 hours for the Sun to return to the same place in the sky.

Does the earth have tilt?

Yes. It rotates about an imaginary line that passes between the poles called axis of Earth. The axis is tilted at 23.5o .

What causes seasons on Earth?

We get seasons as the axis of earth is always tilted over the same direction. When the earth is on one side of the sun, if the northern hemisphere (the world north of equator) is tilted towards the sun, it gets summer. When the earth is on the other side of the sun, the northern hemisphere is tilted away, bringing winter. When earth gets autumn and spring, both the hemisphere receives equal amount of sunlight.

How far is the Sun from Earth?

The Sun is approximately 150 million km away from the Earth. However, it varies according to the position of the Earth in its orbit. At its closest point called perihelion on 3rd January, it is 147,097,800 km away. At the furthest point also called aphelion on 4th July, it is 152,098,200 km away.

What is leap year?

Earth takes 365 days to complete one revolution around the Sun. This is why a year is considered to have 365 days. However, the actual number of days the Earth takes to complete one revolution is 365.242 days. Hence, in order to takes the extra quarter of a day info account, we add an extra day to February every four year, called leap year.
