What are fossils?
Fossils are
the preserved remnants of plants and animals. They are usually found in rocks.
They are several years old. They may be the remains of living things like bones,
shells, eggs, seeds and so on. Or, they may footprint or scratch marks left
long ago.
Different fossils
There are different ways in which things
once alive can be fossilized.
What are stromatolites?
The oldest
fossils are 'Stromatolites'. They are formed by bacteria such as cyanobacteria.
Some of these date back to over 3 billion years!
How does formation of fossil take place?
Most fossils
form when the dead remains of animals or plants get buried in the mud. They
remain buried for years and eventually turn to stone.
How can a fossil's age be found?
Scientists
fell a fossil's age from the rock it is found in. They know how Ola rocks are
relative to each other because layers of rock form on top of each other, so the
lowest layers are the oldest. Measuring the fossil's radioactivity gives a more
precise date.
Iguanodon dinosaur
In the 1820 s,
fossil hunter Gideon Mantell found the fossil or the Iguanodon dinosaur. He
found a fossilized claw of the Iguanodon. It was similar to that of a modern
iguana (a type of lizard)only twenty times bigger!
How is it known that dinosaurs existed?
Dinosaurs
existed because they left behind a huge number of their fossilized remains. For
a long time, no one knew what they were. The Chinese thought they belonged to dragons.
Finally, in the 1820 s, an English naturalist called William Buckland recognized
them. Till date, hundreds of species of dinosaurs have been identified from
fossils. Recently, a clutch of dinosaur eggs Was discovered With the babies
inside.
What is the need for the geologists to study fossils?
To know the
age of a rock, geologists study the fossils it contains. Many Species only lived
are certain times during Earth's history. So, it a rock contains a species that
dates from a certain time that dates must have formed at that time too.
What are index fossils?
Useful fossil
species for dating are called index fossils. These index fossils include certain
ancient kinds of shellfish called trilobites, graptolites, brachiopods,
crinoids, ammonites and belemnites.
Which were the biggest dinosaurs of all?
The biggest
dinosaurs were the plant-eating sauropods. They had long necks and are leaves from
tall frees. Of them, biggest dinosaur may have been brachiosaurus. If was at
least
What information do fossils give us?
The study of
fossils tells us how plants and animals evolved on Earth. If was found that
most species only lived for a short time, before being superseded by another
better adapted to the conditions of the time.
