Why do you eat?
Most of the
food you eat is fuel which is burned by your body to get energy to keep you
going. To get energy, you need carbohydrates and fats. You also need small amounts
of proteins for repairing and building body cells. Tiny traces of vitamins and
minerals are also needed.
Where does food go when
youeat it?
The food
goes down your body through a long tube called the alimentary canal. When you swallow
the food, it slides down your gullet or esophagus into the stomach. Here, it
churns around for a few hours. Then, if is squeezed into along, cold fube
called the small intestine. The nourishing parts of the food are absorbed into
the blood here. The rest are passed on into a larger tube called the large
intestine. The waste or feces is pushed out through the anus.
How long are your guts?
The guts or
intestine are coiled up so much that if you unwound them, they would be over
three times as long as your body-6 m.

Most of the system is the alimentary canal, the long tube that takes food
through your body.
How is food broken
down?
Food is
broken into small molecules by a process called digestion in two ways. First, food
is broken up mechanically by chewing and by the squeezing of the muscles of your gut. Second, if is at tacked
by acids, such as bile and
hydrochloride
acid in your stomach, and by chemicals Called enzymes, mixed in with your
saliva and stomach Juices.
What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates
are foods made of sugar like glucose and starch Bread, rice, potatoes and
pasta, as well as sweet things, are rich in Carbohydrates.
What are fats?
Fats are
greasy foods that do not dissolve in water. Some are solid, like cheese and meat
fat while others are oils. Fats are usually stored by the body as energy
reserves, rather than burned up at once like Carbohydrates.
Which food makes you grow?
To grow,
your body needs proteins. They are the substances from which cells ore built. Proteins
are made from 20 basic chemicals called amino acids. The body can make 12 of
these. The other eight are obtained by eating protein-is food such as milk, fish,
meat, eggs and beans.
Inside a tooth
Your teeth
must be really hard to chew food every day. The outside of a tooth is made from
enamel. It is the hardest substance in your body. Inside that is dentin a
material as hard as bone. At the center is a pulpy
mass of blood and bones.
A healthy diet
A healthy
diet consists of just the right amount of each kind of food your body needs.
The bulk of your diet must be solid food like carbohydrates. it must also
contain enough fat, plenty of protein, and the correct amount of vitamins and
minerals.
Why are teeth
different?
Different teeth
perform different tasks. The flat 'incisors at the front have sharp edges for
slicing through food. The pointed canines just behind the incisors are good for
ripping chewy food. The big flat-topped 'premolars and 'molars forwards. The
back of your mouth are good for grinding food.
